Body Fat Calculator
Estimate your body fat percentage using the highly accurate U.S. Navy method.
How Is Body Fat Calculated?
nnnnThis calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, which estimates body fat percentage from simple body measurements. For men, it uses waist and neck circumference along with height. For women, it additionally requires hip circumference. This method has been validated against more expensive methods like DEXA scans and hydrostatic weighing, with accuracy typically within 3-4% for most people.
nnnnWhy Body Fat Matters More Than Weight
nnnnYour body fat percentage tells you much more about your health than your weight alone. Two people can weigh the same but have very different body compositions. Someone with more muscle and less fat is generally healthier than someone with less muscle and more fat, even at the same weight. Excess body fat - especially visceral fat around the organs - is linked to increased risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and metabolic syndrome.
nnnnHow to Measure Accurately
nnnnFor the most accurate results, measure in the morning before eating. Use a flexible measuring tape and keep it snug but not tight. Measure your waist at navel level (not at the narrowest point). Measure your neck at the narrowest point, just below the larynx. For women, measure hips at the widest point of the buttocks. Take each measurement twice and use the average.
nnnnDisclaimer: This calculator provides estimates and should not replace professional body composition analysis. For accurate results, consult a healthcare provider or fitness professional who can perform a DEXA scan or other clinical measurement.
