How This Calculator Works

This tool uses the Widmark Formula -- the most clinically validated method for estimating blood alcohol concentration from drink count and body weight. Developed by Swedish physician Erik P.M. Widmark in 1932 and confirmed by decades of forensic and toxicological research, it is the same formula used by law enforcement agencies and forensic toxicologists worldwide.

Widmark Formula:

BAC = (Alcohol in grams divided by (Body weight in grams x r)) x 100 minus (0.015 x Hours elapsed)

Where r (Widmark factor) = 0.68 for males and 0.55 for females, reflecting differences in average body water composition. One US standard drink = 14 grams of pure alcohol (NIAAA definition). The 0.015 figure is the liver's average ethanol elimination rate per hour at normal function.

One US standard drink is defined by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) as 14 grams of pure alcohol -- equivalent to a 12 oz regular beer (5% ABV), a 5 oz glass of wine (12% ABV), or a 1.5 oz shot of distilled spirits (40% ABV). Factors That Affect Your BAC
